2nd Test: France 16 NZ 3
Rugby Union - 1986 New Zealand Tour of France - Second Test: France 16 NZ 3
David Kirk kick ahead for the All Blacks at the Stade de la Beaujoire, Nantes. Wayne Buck Shelford is second left, and captain Jock Hobbs is second right.
Shelford was knocked out in the first half after being caught by French boots at the bottom of a ruck, losing several teeth and also tearing his scrotum. Remarkably he had this injury stitched up on the sideline and returned to the field, however later in the game he suffered another blow to the head and left the field with concussion.
The match became known as The Battle of Nantes due to the physicality of the French play. A 2015 book by French investigative journalist Pierre Ballester alleges that the entire French team had been loaded on amphetamines by the team doctor before kick-off.
