EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two stunning members of the Yucca family: Yucca flaccida, commonly known as the Needle Palm, and Yucca puberula, also called the Pubescent-stemmed Yucca or Adams' Needle. The image, created by the skilled hands of Edward Dalton Smith and expertly engraved by Weddell, was originally published in Robert Sweet's renowned horticultural publication, "The British Flower Garden," in 1828. The Needle Palm, depicted on the left, is a native of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Its slender, arching leaves, resembling long, sharp needles, give it an otherworldly appearance. The plant's inflorescence, or flowering stalk, emerges from the center of the rosette, bearing creamy-white flowers that attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. On the right, the Pubescent-stemmed Yucca, or Adams' Needle, is native to the southeastern United States. This Yucca species is easily identified by its densely pubescent, or hairy, stems. Its rosette of narrow, lance-shaped leaves is topped by a tall, unbranched inflorescence adorned with bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers. Both of these Yucca species were popular additions to Victorian-era gardens due to their unique beauty and hardiness. The intricate details of their botanical structures are masterfully captured in this engraving, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over 190 years ago.
