EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the King of Poland, Roi de Pologne, from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century. The image, published in Paris in 1890, is taken from illustrated manuscript 4790 in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. The regal figure is shown in full armor, mounted on horseback and wearing the distinctive white and red livery of the Polish monarchy. Atop his helmet, the royal crest of Poland is proudly displayed - a white eagle with its wings spread, clutching a golden branch in its talons. The eagle is a powerful symbol of Polish sovereignty and has been a part of the Polish coat of arms since the Middle Ages. The intricate details of the King's armor, from the embossed metal plates to the intricate designs on his shield, are beautifully rendered in this chromolithograph. The rich colors and shading give the image a three-dimensional quality that brings the King to life. The Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century was a groundbreaking work that documented the coats of arms of European nobility during the medieval period. Loredan Larchey, a renowned heraldist and historian, compiled this comprehensive collection of armorials, which was widely regarded as a standard reference work in the field. This chromolithograph is a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the Ancient Equestrian Armorials and offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of medieval Europe, where kings and knights wore their heraldic symbols with pride and distinction.
