EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning hand-colored aquatint engraving from Fores Correct Representation of the State Procession on the Occasion of Queen Victoria's Coronation, we witness the grandeur and pomp of the British monarchy during the historic event on June 28, 1838. At the heart of the procession rides Queen Victoria in her golden state carriage, surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting, including Lady Harriet Clive, Lady Caroline Barrington, and the Hon. Lady Hester Stanhope. Riding behind the Queen's carriage is the Captain General of the Royal Archers and Life Guards, Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. The Duke, dressed in his full regalia, holds the reins of his bay horse with a confident and regal demeanor. The mounted Life Guards, in their distinctive red uniforms and bearskins, follow closely behind, their grooms in livery attending to their horses. The Duke of Buccleuch, an aristocrat of great distinction, held several important positions in the British military and court. He was the Captain General of the Royal Archers, an honorary position, and the General of the Life Guards, a position he held from 1837 until his death in 1845. The Duke's presence in the coronation procession signified his loyalty and commitment to the monarchy and the British people. The panoramic view of the procession, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and ceremony of the occasion. The engraving captures the essence of the aristocracy and the pomp and panoply of the British monarchy during Queen Victoria's coronation.
