John Selden (1584-1654): A Scholar of Law, Antiquity, and the Orient John Selden, an English jurist, antiquary, orientalist, and statesman, is depicted in this striking portrait. Born on February 3, 1584, in Wiltshire, England, Selden would go on to make significant contributions to the fields of law, history, and scholarship. Selden's legal career began in earnest when he was admitted to the Middle Temple in London in 1602. He quickly gained a reputation as a brilliant legal mind, and in 1612, he was appointed Serjeant-at-Law. In 1615, Selden was elected a Member of Parliament, a position he would hold for the next 30 years. However, Selden's interests extended far beyond the law. He was an avid antiquarian, and his extensive knowledge of ancient history and languages made him a valuable resource to the early Stuart monarchs. Selden's most famous work in this field is "Munimenta Antiqua," a collection of ancient documents and charters that is still used by historians today. Selden's interest in the Orient began in the 1610s, when he began studying Middle Eastern languages and literature. He was one of the first European scholars to delve deeply into Islamic law and culture, and his work laid the groundwork for the study of Orientalism in Europe. Despite his many accomplishments, Selden's life was not without controversy. He was a vocal critic of the Church of England and its practices, and he clashed with Archbishop Laud over the issue of tithes. Selden's outspokenness earned him the nickname "the Learned," but it also made him a target of the authorities.
